Librarians are responsible for collection development in disciplines that support the curriculum and research needs of the University. The list of librarians with selection responsibilities is available from the Library web page or directly at <http://www2.lib.udel.edu/colldev/ selector.htm/>.
All suggestions for books, journals, media, electronic media, microforms and journal backfiles should be forwarded to the librarian responsible for the discipline. Suggestions may be made via an online form, "Recommendation for Library Purchase" <http://www2.lib.udel.edu/ colldev/request.htm/>.
Using the multimedia workstation
A multimedia workstation is available for use in viewing and creating multimedia in the media area on the lower level of the Morris Library.
The multimedia workstation has an integrated computer, laserdisc player, CD-ROM drive, sound card and VCR. Software on the station includes WIN/TV, WIN/TV Capture, Podium for Windows, PowerPoint and Astound.
Users are able to view, interact, capture and download images and sounds from videos, CD-ROMs and videodiscs in the media collection for use in multimedia presentations.
The workstation is also connected to the campus cable system and the Internet, providing access to almost limitless visual resources.
Electronic library resources and Library Networked Databases are also accessible from outside the Library. On campus, in offices, classrooms and residence halls, University users need to use a computer connected to the campus network that has access to the World Wide Web, and their UNIX account. UD users can also use the UD microcomputing sites in Georgetown, Dover and Wilmington to access electronic Library resources. Begin by selecting "Libraries" from the main UD home page or go directly to the Library web page at <http://www.lib.udel.edu/>.
Off campus, UD users may obtain communications software to access the University campus network. Use the UD Web Proxy Server if using a non-UD Internet service provider such as America Online or others.
The Web Proxy server allows UD users to access information that is restricted to use only by UD users, such as all library networked databases. Library databases are available only to UD users due to electronic license restrictions. Users must use a Netscape browser when using the Web Proxy Server. Searching for scholarly information on the World Wide Web can require combing through thousands of web sites.
The Library, as part of its role in organizing electronic information, has used its staff and resources to organize subject-oriented web pages.
The Library offers subject web pages for nearly all disciplines in which the University offers degrees. Over 90 subject web pages created by UD librarians specializing in each subject are now available.
From the Library web page <http://www.lib.udel.edu/>, click on "Access to Internet and Subject Resources" or go directly to the subject web pages at <http://www2.lib.udel.edu/subj/>.
The subject web pages provide links to UD Library databases, including DELCAT, information on library research guides, links to pertinent UD web pages and links to many web sites of interest to each discipline under "Guide to Internet Resources" on the subject web page.
The subject pages are updated and reviewed regularly. The web pages were created through the combined efforts of Collection Development and the Reference Department.
