Returning students discovered a number of changes at the Scrounge in the Perkins Student Center. Dining Services is busy finalizing renovations to the Scrounge, which features two distinct areas-a food court and a cafe area. The design is meant to encourage a cozy and inviting feeling and provide a quiet alternative to the bright new Trabant University Center on the other side of campus.
"A student focus group was the impetus for the changes being made at the Scrounge," Duane Clark, Dining Services, said. "The changes were all derived from the students responses about what they were looking for in the Perkins Student Center. We're very happy with the results and know the students will be as well."
The new Scrounge food court differs from the old in that the self-serve area was expanded to include a much larger salad bar, a Leghorn's Rotisserie Chicken concept doubled in size and the fountain beverages station offers easier. The Scrounge continues to provide other campus food favorites, such as Itza Pizza, Allegro Pasta and Easy-Goes Sandwiches, and it will tailor its offerings depending on the tastes and needs of the customers and programmed events.
The Scrounge Café, as it is temporarily called, consists of a computer links area, a coffee and pastry bar and a raised platform. The computer links area offers more than 30 ports for laptop computer users to "surf" the web.
The Perkins Student Operations Desk offers a limited number of laptops to students for checkout. The coffee and pastry bar serves Starbucks Coffee, espressos, cappuccinos, pastries baked fresh on site and hand-dipped or soft-serve ice cream. The platform area will be used for dining as well as showcasing presentations, fashion shows, small jazz and band combos and any other smaller-venue performances. Sofas, club chairs and coffee and dining tables also are in this area to provide casual seating and a nice place to study.
The hours at the Scrounge are 7:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays; 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m., Fridays; and 2 p.m.-8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. However, hours may change based on customer needs.
"The Scrounge also has the capacity to be partitioned off in three areas." Clark said.
"We can leave the Cafe or the stage area open later, or we could change food hours on the weekends if the customers wish. It all depends on participation and need," he added.
Dining Services provides food service to 20 UD dining locations across campus, including four dining halls, two food courts in student centers, three retail markets, three express take-out/delivery locations, seven food stands, one fine dining restaurant and concession stands.
