Gershwin tunes at music gala

On Tuesday, Sept. 15, the Department of Music will present "By George and More," the ninth annual gala concert featuring faculty soloists and ensembles. The concert is at 8 p.m. in Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Admission is free, with seating on a first-come, first-seated basis.

The concert features a salute to George Gershwin in honor of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Gershwin's An American in Paris will be played by pianists Julie Nishimura and Michael Steinberg in an arrangement for two pianos. A number of Gershwin tunes- including "S'wonderful," "He Loves and She Loves," "They All Laughed" and "Embraceable You"-will be sung by baritone Patrick Evans, accompanied by pianist Michael Arenson.

The UD Faculty Jazz Sextet (Vernon James and Wendell Hobbs, saxophones; Harvey Price, mallets; Doug Mapp, bass; Tom Palmer, drums; and Michael Arenson, piano) will play "Our Love is Here to Stay" in an arrangement by Harvey Price.

Also on the program is Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, performed by Christine Delbeau, Nishimura, James Ancona and Price. Plus, works spanning two centuries will be presented by David Myford, violin; Charles Forbes, cello; the DelArte Wind Quintet; the Taggart-Grycky Flute and Guitar Duo; hornist Cynthia Carr; and trombonist Jay Hildebrandt.
