First UDWC meeting Sept. 28

The University of Delaware Women's Club will begin its fall season with an event at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 28, at the home of President and Mrs. David P. Roselle, 47 Kent Way. Nancy Targett, associate dean of the College of Marine Studies, will address issues related to the environment and research in the College of Marine Studies.

Targett's area of expertise is marine chemical ecology, focusing on interactions between and among species in the marine environment that are mediated by naturally occurring chemicals. She is a past officer of the International Society of Chemical Ecology, has served as editor of its newsletter, chair of its student award committee and a member of the society's advisory council.

In addition she holds a federal appointment to the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council where she chairs the Science and Statistics Committee and the Surf Clam and Ocean Quahog committee. She is on the editorial boards of several journals, including the Journal of Chemical Ecology.

Within her home community, Targett has chaired the boards of the Jefferson School, an independent elementary and school in Georgetown, Del that she helped begin five years ago, and The Sussex Academy of Arts and Science, a charter middle school. She lives in Lewes.

This year's new UDWC officers include Vida Klemas, president, spouse of a member of the marine studies faculty; Jo Kmetz, vice president, part-time faculty member in communication; Elizabeth Olagunju, secretary, spouse of a member of the mathematical sciences faculty; and Laura Schmitt, treasurer, faculty member in physical therapy. .

According to Klemas, "The main goals of the University of Delaware Women's Club have been to welcome newcomers into the UD community by fostering social bonds and by raising money towards continuing education scholarships for women in need of assistance."

Over the years, the club has evolved to encompass all women associated with the University, whether they are employees, students or spouses of faculty or students.
