The Most Improved Chapter Award was presented to members of the University of Delaware chapter of Golden Key National Honor Society at the International Convention Awards Luncheon, held Aug. 7 in Los Angeles.
The most improved award is presented to chapters that have been active for more than one full school year and that have dramatically improved their leadership and involvement. All chapters may apply for the award, but only the most outstanding groups are presented the honor.
William Johnson, health and nursing and UD chapter adviser, was present to accept the award, along with two seniors, Donna Marcus, a political science and criminal justice major, and Randi Gilper, a finance major.
Golden Key is a nonprofit, international academic honors organization that provides recognition, leadership opportunities, career networking, community service and scholarships. There are 270 chapters across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Australia, Canada and Malaysia.
Membership into the society is by invitation only to the top juniors and seniors in all fields of study. The UD chapter has approximately 50 active members who have been involved in such programs as giving educational talks in elementary and middle schools, working with the local food bank and assisting with blood bank drives.
Johnson, chapter adviser for four years, said the national award is very satisfying and recognizes scholarship, service and achievement, the principles that guide the society. UD was one of 11 chapters to receive "The Most Improved Chapter" award and was one of 51 chapters to receive national recognition for its contributions to the society.
"To be one of a handful of schools recognized for its academic achievements and community service is quite an honor," Johnson said. "It's the hope that Delaware can continue the tradition of providing quality programs and activities to the students at the University!"
