Ballet, theatre and music scheduled for kids

Where the Wild Things Are will be performed on Sept. 23 in Mitchell Hall.

Children of all ages can enjoy ballet, theatre and musical performances this academic year through the Junior Series, part of UD's popular Performing Arts Series.

This year's presentations include Where the Wild Things Are, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, A Christmas Carol and Phantom of the Opera. All performances will be held in Mitchell Hall.

The series opens on Wednesday, Sept. 23, with two performances of Where the Wild Things Are, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. World-renowned author Maurice Sendak has teamed up with the American Repertory Ballet to create this wonderful ballet adaptation of his children's classic. The 45-minute dance work brings to life the wildly popular children's book with an exciting rock score by Randy Woolf and stunning sets and costumes designed by Sendak.

Tickets for the matinee are $8 for the general public, $6 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $5 for students and children. Costs for the evening performance are $10 for the general public, $8 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $6 for students and children.

On Sunday, Oct. 18, Theatreworks USA will present the C.S. Lewis classic, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Beginning at 2 p.m., audience members will visit the magical land of Narnia, where winter lasts the year round and an evil witch rules with an iron grasp and a heart of ice. The adventures of four school children that accidentally tumble into Narnia through a wondrous wardrobe are chronicled in the play. Although unlikely heroes, the children are destined to fulfill an ancient prophecy by defeating the evil witch and saving the spellbound land. The hour-long performance conveys the inspirational magic that has captivated young children for decades.

The Blue & Gold Club will offer a special "Bewitching Ice Cream Sundae and Munchies" party prior to the show from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Reservations are necessary and cost for the sundae party is $9 for adults and $7 for children ages 5-11. Tickets for the performance are $10 for the general public, $8 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $6 for students and children.

Two performances of the jubilant holiday musical A Christmas Carol will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 13. Presented by American Family Theatre's Broadway for Kids, this all-time favorite comes to life on stage at 1 and 5 p.m. Beautiful sets and a talented cast will make this Charles Dickens classic a favorite for the whole family.

Tea and sweets will be served by the Blue & Gold Club in Gore Hall from 2:30-4:30 p.m., between performances. Cost of the tea is $8 for adults and $6 for children ages 5-11. Cost of the performance is $10 for the general public, $8 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $6 for students and children.

The Junior Series concludes at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, when Theatreworks USA will present Phantom of the Opera. The hour-long musical tells the story of the phantom that once haunted the Paris Opera House. Based on the story by Gaston Leroux, the story unfolds in a flurry of activity that leads to an exciting conclusion when the phantom's identity is revealed and the mystery is solved.

Tickets are $10 for the general public, $8 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $6 for students and children.
