Senate approves new majors

Several minors in plant and soil sciences and a major and minor in wildlife conservation were established Monday by the University Faculty Senate.

The resolution establishing minors in landscape horticulture, plant biology and environmental soil science within the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences passed without discussion. A second resolution creating a major and minor within the Department of Entomology and Applied Ecology also passed quickly. The new major, which replaces a concentration in wildlife conservation, requires approval by the University's Board of Trustees. Both departments are within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Earlier, several minor revisions to courses and majors also were passed without challenge. A new concentration in biomechanics within the exercise and sport science major was among those changes approved.

Earlier in the meeting, Susan Brynteson, library, told the senators that use of the "order this article" button for the database Current Contents has been expanded to graduate students. Brynteson said that articles ordered this way arrive the next day via Federal Express.

She also urged senators to visit another electronic library service, the Web of Science, a multidisciplinary database of 8,000 journals in the social sciences, arts and humanities and sciences. The Web of Science database goes back 25 years.
