Three campus buildings honored for excellence

Gore Hall

MBNA Amnerica Hall

Monroe Hall

Three recent additions to the University campus-Gore Hall, John Munroe Hall and MBNA America Hall-have received awards from state contracting associations.

Gore Hall, built by the EDiS Co., received a 1998 Construction Excellence Award in the over-$5-million category from the Delaware Contractors Association (DCA) at its annual dinner in Wilmington in December.

The award program's purpose is to "recognize and honor exceptional project teams and to showcase exceptional quality work." A photograph of the building appeared in its publication, The DCA Report.

John Munroe Hall, N.C. Builders Inc, received an excellence in construction award in the under-$5-million category and MBNA America Hall, Wohlsen Construction Co., received a merit award in the over-$5-million category, both from the Delaware Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors at the group's November meeting in Wilmington.

Both buildings appeared in photographs and were described in the organization's awards publication, a supplement of the New Castle Business Ledger.

In the description of Munroe Hall, the article said "The unique challenge...included renovating three existing brick houses along Newark's Delaware Avenue while simultaneously connecting the houses with a 14,000-square foot addition that was to be built on a 15,000-square-foot site."

MBNA America Hall is described as a "return to the colonial brick style of the campus... [that] utilizes many different types of ornately carved brick to achieve the classic colonial brick and cast stone exterior accented by large radium top windows." The article also mentions the "classrooms of the future" that are found in both MBNA America Hall and the renovated Purnell Hall.
