Garden Check, which covers everything from planning a garden to turf disease, is an eight-page newsletter, published 10 times a year, from March though October, for a subscription cost of $17.50.
The newsletter, written by specialists in horticulture, entomology and plant disease, is the only gardening publication to give up-to-date advice based on current conditions in the area, such as drought, insect invasions and lawn diseases.
Its popular column, "Things to Do This Month," provides timely advice on such topics as pruning, garden sanitation and weed control. The newsletter also lists Master Gardener workshops, horticultural activities and related publications.
In addition, Garden Check offers information on integrated pest management, a system emphasizing preventive care and minimal pesticide use. For example, last year there was a special series on beneficial insects, with each issue highlighting one. Thanks to this kind of information, reader surveys show that subscribers are making environmentally sound changes in their gardening, using fewer pesticides and reducing water use.
To subscribe to Garden Check, send a check payable to the University of Delaware to Garden Check, Cooperative Extension, 910 South Chapel St., Newark, De 19716-1303, including your complete mailing address.
