The Center for Black Culture will sponsor the 1999 African Consciousness Celebration with special events planned in February and March. All are planned around the theme "Reclaiming Our Past, Preparing for Our Future."
At 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 24, in Multipurpose Room C, Trabant University Center, Manning Marable, founding director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University, will speak. Also at the event, the University's Louis L. Redding Diversity Award-honoring diversity efforts by a UD individual, department or organization-will be presented by the UD Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity. Last year, the award was presented to the UD RISE program and at that time was called the President's Diversity Award. Marable's talk and the presentation are free and open to the public.
On Friday, Feb. 26, "Club Consciousness," an informal evening of entertainment for students, will be held. The time and location of the event will be announced.
Fiction writer Omar Tyree, author of Flyy Girl and A Do Right Man will lead a discussion on male-female relationships at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 10. The program, free and open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. in Multipurpose Room C of the Trabant University Center.
The celebration concludes on Saturday, March 20, when a bus trip to visit Underground Railroad sites in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania is planned. Cost is $20 for the general public and $10 for UD students. Tickets can be purchased in advance at any University box office.
