Trustee named member of National Science Board

Joseph A. Miller Jr., a member of the UD Board of Trustees and senior vice president of DuPont Research & Development and chief technology officer, has been nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve as a member of the National Science Board.

The National Science Board establishes the policies of the National Science Foundation within the framework of policies set by the president and the Congress. It has 24 members, who serve six-year terms, appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. They are selected on the basis of their eminence in basic, medical and social sciences, engineering, agriculture, education or research management to represent the views of scientific and engineering leaders in all areas of the nation.

Miler joined DuPont in 1966 and has held a variety of positions throughout the company in R & D, manufacturing, business and marketing before becoming senior vice president in 1994 and chief technology officer in 1996. From 1967-69, he served in the U.S. Army at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Industrial Research Institute, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

He received his bachelor's degree from Virginia Military Institute and a doctorate in chemistry from Pennsylvania State University.

On the UD Board of Trustees, Miller serves on the Science, Agriculture and Engineering and Education and Training committees.
