Elbert Chance and Shirley Nelson were among the University of Delaware Association of Retired Faculty (UDARF) volunteers who "litter-ly" cleaned up the roadside along the Christina Parkway and Elkton Road from Casho Mill Road to the Maryland border in October.
According to organizer John Wriston, professor emeritus of chemistry and biochemistry, UDARF was one of the first organizations to join Delaware's Adopt-A-Highway program approximately six years ago, as a community service project.
DelDOT provided vests and plastic bags for the clean-up, and the group picked up about 25 bags of trash and occasional cash.
"The first time we cleaned up the area, we picked up almost 50 bags of trash. We find all sorts of items from tossed-out tires to $5 bills.
"Approximately 50 people have helped out since we began, but we need more volunteers from newly retired faculty for our pick-up project next spring," Wriston said.
