First Unidel math professor dies

Dr. Malcolm Slingsby Robertson, the first Unidel Professor of Mathematics, died Sept. 18 in Kingston, Ontario.

Dr. Robertson received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Toronto and earned his doctorate from Princeton University in 1934. He was a National Research Fellow at the University of Chicago and an instructor of mathematics at Yale University before joining the Rutgers University faculty in 1937, where he was the first director of graduate studies in mathematics in 1959 and received the Outstanding Research Award in 1964.

He joined the UD faculty as Unidel Professor Mathematics in 1966, retiring as professor emeritus in 1972.

A research mathematician in the area of complex analysis, Dr. Robertson was the author of more than 400 mathematical reviews and 49 publications. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, two sons and a grandson.
