With the space shuttle Discovery's successful voyage, public attention is once again focused on space exploration.
The University Gallery will celebrate the nation's space program in an upcoming exhibition entitled "One Small Step: Exploring America's Adventures in Space, 1959-1999," to be held from May 20-Nov. 1.
The exhibition will examine space exploration in three different ways: how science and technology combined in the Apollo program, how the visual and literary arts have interpreted space endeavors and the Delaware region's contributions to the space program.
The exhibit will demonstrate how the three are interconnected. For example, an artist's impression of a footprint on the moon is combined with a prototype of the boot, which was researched and designed in Delaware. In this way, the space program, the product and the artistic interpretation are linked.
The exhibition is designed to encourage new ways to perceive and interpret this compelling cultural story.
