The 1998-99 Coaches vs. Cancer Program at UD will be dedicated to the late Dr. Janice Jordan, who served as director of the Student Services for Athletes Program, associate director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development and assistant professor of education. She died of the disease last June.
The UD men's and women's basketball teams will participate in the IKON 3 Point Attack, a national Coaches vs. Cancer program.
In a joint letter to friends of Delaware basketball, Mike Brey, men's basketball coach, and Tina Martin, women's basketball coach, wrote "Our athletic department, University and community as a whole lost a very special lady this past summer." Writing that Dr. Jordan "fought a brave battle...and would want the battle to go on," the coaches have dedicated this year's Coaches vs. Cancer program to "her fightin' spirit."
Fans can make a pledge, beginning at 50 cents, to the American Cancer Society for every 3-point shot the Fightin' Blue Hens make this season (last year's total was 222). Corporate "teams" also are invited to participate. Interested persons also may make flat donations to the program.
Last year, UD was 24th in the nation for total funds raised from sponsorships and donations. The UD program is sponsored by Michel J. Axe and David T. Sowa of First State Orthopaedics.
For information or corporate "team" sign-up forms, call the American Cancer Society at 324-4227 or 1-800-304-0779.
