Toe-tapping performance by Rhythm & Brass Nov. 21

In tune with the past...in sync with the future" is how Rhythm & Brass describes itself. This acclaimed ensemble will be performing at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, in Mitchell Hall as part of UD's Performing Arts Series.

The Blue & Gold Club will offer a reception at 6 p.m. in Gore Hall before the performance. The group also will hold a residency clinic, free and open to the public, at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 20, at a location to be announced.

Six virtuosi performing on trumpets, horn, piano, trombone, tuba and percussion speak as one in Rhythm & Brass. Whether in recital, with orchestra or in collaborative concerts, these internationally acclaimed artists bring an extraordinarily diverse range of talent and expertise to the stage.

"Entertaining...accomplished... stylish...clever...distinctively different," a reviewer wrote in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Combining musical artistry and integrity with insightful communicative gifts, the group engages audiences with sophisticated charm and charisma. Its repertoire extends from the pristine baroque tradition to chamber jazz and beyond.

"They were young and they played hungry-like every note counted and every phrase had to be just right. The program deftly balanced early music, original works, transcriptions and jazz selections," reviewer David Williams wrote in the Charleston Gazette.

The ensemble has released three acclaimed compact discs on the d'Note Records label. While maintaining a full touring schedule, the group also has performed at numerous special events such as a concert at Carnegie Recital Hall with jazz trumpeter Randy Brecker. Commissioned works by Dana Wilson and Daniel William McCarthy have been premiered at Chicago's Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic and the national convention of the Music Educators' National Conference.

Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for UD faculty, staff, alumni and senior citizens and $6 for children and students. Cost of the Blue & Gold Club reception, featuring hors d'oeuvres and cash bar, is $15 for adults and $8 for children 5-11. For information, call 831-2204.
