Making Learning Active For You and Your Students
for graduate TAs
Instructors: Karen Gaffney and Jennifer Levi, English
3-4:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, Room 208 Gore Hall
This session will introduce you to the key aspects of active learning, with a focus on specific strategies you can incorporate into small and large classes.

Active learning benefits students by providing ways for them to interact with the material in a meaningful way.

Active learning strategies also help students retain more information and develop critical thinking skills. In addition, the instructor benefits by learning more about the material from students, making the session relevant and interesting.

Utilizing the Potential of the Flashlight Current Student Inventory
for new faculty
1:30-3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13, Room 208 Gore Hall
The Flashlight Current Student Inventory, an evaluation tool kit, is aimed at helping educators answer some of the most fundamental questions about the impact of instructional technologies on student learning.

We will place the "Flashlight" within the broader context of evaluation and assessment and provide an overview of this assessment tool and also offer guidelines for meaningful item selection and integration into instruments that faculty have been using.

Enhancing Learning Through Writing
For graduate TAs
Instructors: Allison Carpenter and Windy Counsell, English
4-5:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16, Room 303 Gore Hall
This session will introduce participants to a toolbox of writing activities of various types and lengths to enhance student learning. The primary focus will be on helping instructors develop a larger role for writing-to-learn in the classroom, to design effective writing assignments for optimal results and to create efficient and time-saving grading strategies.

Designing a Learning-Centered Course Syllabus
for new faculty and TAs
Instructors: Anna Bergstrom, foreign languages and literatures, and Gabriele Bauer, CTE
9-10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 10, Room 208 Gore Hall
