The recognition includes $1,000, provided to the library for books that reflect the mission of UD's Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity, items that reflect the perspectives of different races, cultures and genders or those that deal with various religions, ethnic groups, sexual orientations, alternative lifestyles and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Each item selected and added to the library collection as a result of the award will have a bookplate noting that it is in honor of the RISE program on its selection as the 1998 diversity award recipient.
Members of the selection committee included Araya Debessay, accounting; Francis A. Kwansa, hotel, restaurant and institutional management; Wunyabari Maloba, history; Samuel L. Gaertner and Robert F. Simons, psychology; and Judith Y. Gibson, affirmative action and multicultural programs.
UD student delegates to the east coast regional conference of the National Association of Campus Activities won awards at the October meeting in Syracuse.
Representing the Student Center Programs Advisory Board (SCPAB), HOLA and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgendered Community and the Activities and Programs Office, the group of 10 was nominated an Outstanding Delegation for the conference, based on spirit and enthusiasm. Diane Sumutka, SCPAB president, won the Outstanding Student Leader award.
SCPAB also won first- and second-place awards for Outstanding Student Originated Art (non-poster) for its flyers for last year's premier of the X-Files season in Bacchus and the Superbowl party in the Hen Zone.
