An opening reception to honor the artists will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the gallery. Light refreshments will be served. A special event held in conjunction with the exhibition will be a gallery discussion by Graham and Moss at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Those attending are encouraged to bring lunch.
Admission to the University Gallery, located on the second floor of historic Old College, is free. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 1-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Martha Carothers, chairperson of department of art, is a graphic designer, book artist and teacher in the visual communications program. Her research is directed toward letterpress printing and computer design in the production of her bookworks. Carothers' work has been widely exhibited and awarded Delaware State Arts Council grants. She has cocurated exhibitions with University and regional galleries and works collaboratively with students to design museum and gallery catalogs. Carothers is currently researching the design of 1960s-1970s children's books.Anne Krohn Graham is finishing her teaching career that began at UD in 1972, when she developed the metals/jewelry program. Graham's research is in the applications of electrochemistry using electroforming and anodizing aluminum. The Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York, and Delaware Art Museum collections include her work. She has had her work exhibited internationally and has lectured and taught workshops in Europe and the Far East. Graham will soon become a studio artist in her new residence of Richland, Wash.
Joe Moss is retiring after 43 years of teaching sculpture, 28 as coordinator of the UD sculpture program. He has been the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Delaware State Arts Council and University awards. Moss was an Artist Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His sculpture and paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and Europe, and are included in numerous collections. Moss is developing his studio and exhibition space for the years ahead.
Raymond Nichols coordinates the visual communications program and is a principal in Cypher + Nichols + Design. He is involved in student projects including DEViCes (visual communications newsletter), Designers (visual communications web site) and posters for discipline and department events. Nichols' area of research is Volkswagen advertising during the 1960s and web design. He works at C+N+D as creative director on major promotions for Sterling Diagnostic Imaging, the largest producer of X-ray film and the first direct-to-digital (filmless) X-ray system.
Robyn Phillips Pendleton began her illustration career as a graphic artist intern at USA Today. Her career continued as an editorial illustrator and graphic artist in newspapers. At UD, Phillips Pendleton is the coordinator of the illustration program. Her work is drawn by color and light as they play out in narrative, cultural situations involving the human form and is traditional in application. Phillips Pendleton focuses on books and specialty publication illustration and illustrated CD covers. She recently traveled to Africa for book illustration projects.
