Search committee begins work

Dean Carolyn Thoroughgood, marine studies, will lead the search for a new dean of the College of Engineering.

Andras Szeri, mechanical engineering chairperson and Robert L. Spencer Professor of Mechanical Engineering, is serving as interim dean, replacing Stuart Cooper, who is now vice president and chief academic officer of the Illinois Institute of Technology and Philip Danforth Armour Professor of Engineering.

Provost Mel Schiavelli said the committee will conduct a wide-ranging search-both on and off the campus. It is hoped the new dean will be in place by July 1, 1999.

Search committee members include Gonzalo Arce, electrical and computer engineering; Antony Beris, chemical engineering; Costel Denson, research; Ardeshir Faghri, civil and environmental engineering; Mary Galvin, materials science and engineering; Jack Gillespie, materials science and composite materials; Michael Vaughan, engineering and RISE; and Anthony Wexler, mechanical engineering.

The committee will aim to conclude its search in the 1999 spring semester so the new dean will assume his or her duties July 1, 1999.
