'Worksite Wellness' topic of regional health conference

Worksite health promotion, absenteeism and managing change in the workplace will be the keynote topics at this year's Mid Atlantic Worksite Wellness Conference. Entitled, "Back to the Future-Worksite Health Promotion- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow," the conference will be held from 8:15 a.m.-4:15 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, at Clayton Hall.

This is the 10th anniversary of the conference, sponsored jointly by the Delaware Center for Wellness (DCW) and the UD Division of Continuing Education. To mark the anniversary, conference organizers will highlight past accomplishments and focus on future challenges in workplace wellness.

"For our 10th anniversary, we're bringing back the best from the past and introducing new, dynamic speakers, topics and activities to make this a very memorable event for everyone," Carol Soha, executive director of DCW, said.

Workplace absenteeism will be discussed by Ian Pike, director of Employee Health and Safety Services at the Healthcare Benefit Trust in Vancouver, Canada. On any average workday, 2.8 percent of employees are absent from the workplace, according to DCW. Pike's presentation will offer practical measures employers can implement to help create a healthy, attendance-oriented workplace.

Other keynote speakers will be David Hunnicutt, president of the Wellness Council of America, and organizational psychologist David Baum.

Other topics to be presented include workers' compensation and disability, health promotion and the bottom line and medical self-care programs.

Exhibits will be set up to show the latest prevention products and services available for the workplace.

Professionals in human resources, health care, workplace wellness, occupational health and health education will benefit from the conference. Continuing education credits are offered for health educators and nurses.

Conference fee is $175 for the general public and $125 for DCW members. The student rate is $35 with a copy of a current I.D. For registration information or to reserve an exhibit booth, contact Ann Harvey at 831-3474 or by e-mail at Ann.Harvey@mvs.udel.edu
