Parents Day celebration to offer wide range of events

Parents and friends of UD students are invited to participate in a full day of activities on campus during Parents Day, Saturday, Nov. 8.

Saturday morning activities, offered free, will all be held in the Trabant University Center. A welcome reception will begin at 9 a.m. in Daugherty Hall. Deans and administrators will be on hand to meet with families and answer questions.

Ongoing morning activities include computer demonstrations from 9 -11:30 a.m. and presentations on graduate education, career resources at UD and study abroad programs, all from 10-11 a.m.

From 11 a.m.-1 p.m., parents and friends are invited to lunch in the Delaware Field House. Cost is $8.25 for adults and $4.25 for children under the age of 7. Advance tickets are required. The luncheon includes a pre-football game show of school spirit presented by the UD Marching Band, cheerleaders and the Precision Dance Team.

The football game begins at 1 p.m., when the Fightin' Blue Hens take on the Huskies of the University of Connecticut. Tickets are $16. An exciting half-time show will feature the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team.

There also will be a seat cushion giveaway to the first 5,000 fans. compliments of Metrocall. Also during the pregame, the first class of the Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame will be recognized.

The game will be followed by dinner from 5-7 p.m. at the Trabant University Center. Cost is $11.75 for adults and $7.25 for children under the age of 7. Advance tickets are required.

Activities continue throughout the afternoon and evening with the following offered free: an open house at the new MBNA America Hall from 4-6 p.m.; an open house and reception at the Center for Black Culture from 4-7 p.m.; and an ice show featuring world champion figure skaters in the Fred Rust Ice Arena at 4:30 p.m..

Two songfests featuring UD vocal groups will be held in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building at 4:30 and 9 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

The Bobs, a renowned and irreverent a cappella ensemble, will perform as part of the Performing Arts Series, at 5 and 9 p.m. in Mitchell Hall. Cost is $15 for adults and $6 for students.

Additionally, two films, Hercules at 8 p.m. and Contact at 10:30 p.m., will be shown in the Trabant University Center Theatre. All seats cost $2.

Throughout the day, parents can stop in the Campus Shop in the Trabant University Center or the University Bookstore at the Perkins Student Center.

Paintings by UD alumnae living in the West will be on view in the Recitation Hall Gallery; the UD Mineralogical Museum will be open in Penny Hall; and the University Gallery in Old College will feature an exhibit of R.B. Kitaj's work. All exhibitions are free. The Morris Library and the Fitness Center in the Carpenter Sports Building also will be open.

Additionally, the University's men's ice hockey team will play two games during the weekend. At 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, UD takes on Arizona State in the Gold Arena, and at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, the Hens play Lehigh in the Rust Ice Arena. Tickets for both games are available at the door.
