Each year, University contributors to the United Way who pledge $1 or more per pay are eligible to participate in drawings for incentives. One of most popular prizes is the $800 travel credit provided by Campbell Travel of Newark. (A $5 per pay contribution is necessary to be eligible for this prize.)
Past recipients of this incentive were Donald Puglisi, MBNA America Business Professor of Finance, in 1996, and Rodolpho Tanjuakio, food and resource economics, in 1995.
Puglisi, a longtime United Way contributor, said he is planning to use his award next month during a trip to Cincinnati to visit his daughter and her husband.
The trip would have been taken without the award, but, he said, "this makes the trip even more enjoyable than it would otherwise be."
Tanjuakio said he used the award to purchase a ticket for his mother, who lives in Los Angeles, to visit his family in Delaware.
"I guess I would have bought my mom the ticket anyway," he said, "but it worked out well. It feels good to be of help, though in a small way, to people who need it through the United Way. Contributing to a specific agency gives me greater satisfaction.By providing my contribution, I feel a direct connection to the agency that actually needs it."
A complete listing of the 1997 UD United Way campaign incentives was featured in the Oct. 2 issue of UpDate, and information is available from unit United Way solicitors and by calling 831-6651.
