Paparazzi, press focus of lecture

"Freedom of the Press vs. Privacy: Pretrial Publicity and Constitutional Rights" is the topic of a panel discussion to be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, in 116 Purnell Hall. Panel members are Richard Elliott, who has represented the News Journal Papers, and Juliet Dee, communication, representative of The Review.

The forum will be moderated by James Magee, political science and international relations.

Graduate stress workshop topic

"Traveling Lighter: Putting Graduate Student Stress in Perspective" is the topic of an interactive workshop designed to help graduate students identify the sources of their stress and provide tools for keeping it all in perspective.

Leslie Orysh Connor, counseling and student development, will facilitate the workshop, scheduled from noon-1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24, in Room 206 Trabant University Center. Participants may bring lunch and a guest. Beverages will be provided.

Operatic vocals set at Longwood

Singers from the University music faculty and staff will perform opera highlights at Longwood Gardens at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 12. A meet-the-artists reception will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Terrace Restaurant.

Featured soloists include Marie Robinson, Melanie DeMent, Ruth Oatman, Patrick Evans and Albert Neal.

Cost is $20 per person and includes a day-long admission to the gardens, performance and reception.

Guitarist to play in Loudis hall

A classical guitar recital featuring guest artist John Johns will be presented at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, in Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.

The free, public program will span five centuries of music, including works by Mauro Guiliani, Richard Rodney Bennett, John Dowland and Leo Brouwer.

Johns made his New York debut in 1988 at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. He is associate professor of guitar at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University.

Faculty perform with orchestra

The University Orchestra, under the direction of Peter J. McCarthy will present a free concert at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16, in Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.

Among the featured soloists will be pianist Julie Nishimura, who will perform Haydn's Piano Concerto in D Major, and members of the Mendelssohn String Quarter-Nick Eanet, Nicholas Mann and Marcy Rosen-who will be soloists in Handel's Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 5.

UD community invited to help celebrate education

A Celebration of Education, hosted by Gov. Thomas R. Carper to honor all of Delaware's educators, will be held at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Bob Carpenter Center.

Education students, University faculty and staff are invited to join public, private and religious school teachers, parents, administrators and support staff, mentors, childcare and preschool providers at the gala event.

The event begins with a reception and food court from 5-6:30 p.m., with Delaware students providing musical entertainment. The program starts at 6:45 p.m., with a videotape featuring Delawareans talking about how teachers and educators have helped shape their lives.

The special guest at the celebration is 1986 Teacher of the Year, Guy Doud, author of five award-winning books, including Molder of Dreams, who will be the featured speaker.
