Expo shows ways to go

The way to go is with RideShare Delaware, an innovative program to match carpoolers.

While carpooling is attractive to many people, finding others who have similar schedules and destinations can pose a problem. To answer this need, a computerized program, RideShare Delaware, has been developed to match possible carpoolers.

Students, faculty and staff are all invited and encouraged to learn about and register with RideShare Delaware at the upcoming Transit Expo, to be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Trabant University Center patio, according to coordinator Jim Grimes, public safety. The rain location is the meeting rooms lobby.

Whether commuters can RideShare every day, or just a few days a week, the program provides a great opportunity to team up and cut costs, reduce wear and tear on cars and roads, lessen traffic congestion and help the environment, Grimes said.

To register, participants fill out a simple questionnaire giving basic information about commuting needs. Home addresses will not appear on the match list. After the information is entered in the RideShare database, an information packet, with a personalized ridematch list and map and carpooling hints is sent to registrants. There is no obligation- just an opportunity to find out if there are others in the area who would like to share a ride to school or work.

In addition to the RideShare Delaware program, the event also will feature information about other forms of Delaware transportation, including DART bus service and SEPTA commuter train service. Information on bicycling, details on construction on I-95 and Northern Delaware Greenways also will be available.

RideShare Delaware is administered by the Transportation Management Association of New Castle County as a free public service provided by DART First State. For information, call 1-888-RIDE-MATCH.
