Terry Whittaker, assistant dean for professional development and director of FORTUNE 2000 in the College of Business and Economics, has a new mission this fall. He also is serving as chairperson of the 1997 Education Division of the United Way of Delaware.
In that role, he will oversee and promote the United Way solicitation campaign for Delaware's' public, private and parochial schools in New Castle County, as well as for the state's colleges and universities.
Between Sept. 29 and Nov. 14, Whittaker is responsible for coordinating the fundraising of $450,000 by educational solicitors and employee representatives.
"Over the past several months," Whittaker said, "I've met with school district superintendents, college presidents and individuals who will serve as United Way employee chairpersons. I have attempted to publicize this year's theme-"The Power of U-Without U, There's No Way"-among the group.
"Throughout my travels, I have noticed a high level of enthusiasm among the campaign volunteers. This enthusiasm should inspire past donors to increase their contributions over previous years and persuade greater numbers of prospective contributors to donate."
Whittaker said that through his role as chairperson of the education division, he has gained greater insight into the United Way administrative operations and the more than 85 agencies it funds annually.
"I've been impressed by the services these agencies provide," he said. "They are definitely contributing to making Delaware a quality place to live for all residents. Moreover, my involvement has inspired me to increase my Untied Way contribution over last year's."
The annual kickoff reception for the UD United Way drive is scheduled for Oct. 13, with the campaign continuing through Oct. 31.
The UD campaign goal is $185,000. Last year UD employees exceeded the $160,000 goal.
