Delaware Discovery Days, formerly Delaware Preview Days, will be held Saturdays, July 11, 18 and 25. More than 50,000 prospective students and their families have been invited to discover if the University of Delaware is right for them. These students come from all 50 states, with most from the Eastern seaboard. Last year, 7,474 persons attended, up from 6,500 the previous year.
The program reflects more than a new name; it also has new themes, new activities and a new structure. The number of dates has been changed from six days to three Saturdays, the most popular visiting days in past years.
"This year, we are using a different format," Porter said. "In past years, all information sessions were held at the Bob Carpenter Center, followed by campus tours. This year, we are holding morning sessions at the Bob Carpenter Center and afternoon programs in several buildings on the main campus. The new arrangement will enable visitors to experience the University in a broader sense and see firsthand what it has to offer.
"We are still offering 'one-stop shopping,' where interested students and their families can learn about all phases of campus life, including academics, housing, student support services, student life and activities, admissions and financial aid. There will be question/answer opportunities as well," Porter said.
Delaware Discovery Days begin at 8 a.m. with registration and refreshments. During that time, students and parents can surf the UD home page on the web, view slides and meet administrators and deans informally.
President David P. Roselle and other administrators will welcome visitors at 9:30 a.m. From 10 a.m. until noon, students and their families may attend an Information Fair with representatives from various academic and student life departments. At 10:30 a.m., bus service to the main campus will begin with student-led campus tours from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Admissions and financial aid sessions will be held every half hour from 12:45-3:15 p.m. on the main campus. Interactive presentations and a housing video highlight the program.
The University Honors Program and several academic disciplines also will hold sessions in buildings on campus from 1-3 p.m., with faculty available to discuss the programs offered and to field questions.
Visitors also will receive dining information for lunch locations both on campus and on Main Street.
"Coordinating and planning Delaware Discovery Days is a challenge, but the University has received top evaluations from visitors in previous years, ranging in the 97/98 percentile of approval," Porter said.
Others from admissions serving on the Delaware Discovery Days committee are Martha Bailey, David Johnson, Marianne Johnson, Lynn Loper, Jennifer Meeker and Robert Snyder.
