Library announces winners of book collecting contest

Three UD students won the 1998 Book Collecting Contest sponsored by the University of Delaware Library Associates. Winners were announced at an awards presentation held at the Morris Library. Gordon A. Pfeiffer, a member of the library associates board of directors, presided at the ceremony.

Prizes were awarded in the undergraduate category to Wanda R. Williams of Wilmington, a human resources major, for her collection on Louisa May Alcott (first place prize of $200) and to Steve Wheeler of Lebanon, Pa., an English major, for his collection of books on the Middle Ages (second place prize of $100).

In the graduate student category, the first place prize of $200 went to Scott Lightsey of Alexanderia, Va., an English major, for his collection on manuscript illumination. The award recipients also received a copy of ABC for Book Collectors by John Carter, contributed by Robert Fleck of Oak Knoll Books in New Castle; a first-year membership in the University of Delaware Library Associates and a commemorative poster in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the associates organization.

In addition to Pfeiffer, judges for the 1998 contest were Craig A. Wilson, library collections, and Timothy D. Murray, Special Collections Department.

The 1998 contest was the ninth such event sponsored by the library associates, a group of individuals who work to expand and enrich the research collections of the University of Delaware Library.

Selections from the prize winning collections will be on view through June 15 in the exhibition cases on the first floor of the Morris Library. Assistance for the cash prizes was provided by the Delaware Bibliophiles.
