June is National Safety Month
According to the National Safety Council, a fatal injury occurs every 6 minutes and a disabling injury occurs every 2 seconds. In 1996, fatal injuries caused by car crashes, fires, falls, burns, poisonings and other unintentional causes increased to 93,400-the fourth straight increase in a row and an 8 percent increase from 1992.
In an effort to promote public awareness and ultimately decrease the number of injuries and deaths, the National Safety Council has recognized June as National Safety Month. Each week a different topic is emphasized:
- Home Safety (cosponsored by Lowe's Home Safety Council) from June 7-13,
- First Aid and Community Safety, from June 14-20 and
- Driving and Bicycle Safety, from June 21-27.
Informative web links for each week can be found at the National Safety Council web page at www.NSC.ORG/nsm.htm
