MAndrew Fields of Newark, associate professor and acting chair of the Department of Finance, has been named chairperson of the department, Dana M. Johnson, dean of the College of Business and Economics announced. The appointment is effectively immediately.
Fields replaces former chairperson Robert Schweitzer, who has returned to the faculty.
"Andy Fields will do an excellent job in the continuing development of the department. He brings a wealth of experience in teaching, research and professional service to the position. As importantly, he is committed to the University of Delaware and its goal of excellence," Johnson said in announcing the appointment.
Fields joined the University of Delaware faculty in 1985.
He received a bachelor's degree in management from James Madison University and an MBA, a master's degree in accounting and his doctorate in finance from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The first faculty position he held was at the University of Kentucky.
His teaching interests are in the area of corporate finance, and he teaches primarily in the college's MBA program. His research interests include acquisitions and corporate control, and his latest work has focused on the impact of both state anti-takeover and interstate banking legislation.
Fields has published articles in many journals including the Journal of Finance, Journal of Portfolio Management and Journal of Business Research. He recently edited two special issues of Managerial Finance. In addition, he has served on the editorial board of the Mid-Atlantic Journal of Business and is a reviewer for several other journals.
He is a former member of the board of directors of the Southern Finance Association and is an active member in a number of other professional associations.
