Touring company is seeking actors

Aspiring actors in grades K-12 are invited to audition for a special experience this summer in Sussex County. The Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT), scheduled to perform at the University's annual Summer Arts Festival, will be casting approximately 60 youth parts locally for a July 10 performance of Tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Assistant directors also are needed to help with rehearsals and take on essential backstage responsibilities.

Auditions will be held from 10 a.m.-noon, Monday, July 6, in the theatre of Delaware Technical and Community College in Georgetown. No advance preparation is necessary, and those auditioning should plan to spend the full two hours. Some of those cast will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the auditions. Rehearsals will be held in the theatre daily from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. until the performance on July 10, which will take place on UD's Hugh R. Sharp campus in Lewes. MCT actors and directors will conduct the rehearsals.

Among the roles to be cast locally are that of young Hans, the Players, the Villagers, the Misers, Ida and a bouquet of mischievous Flowers.

MCT's touring productions come to town complete with costumes, scenery, props and make-up. The company's residency at the Summer Arts Festival is sponsored by Nicola Pizza in cooperation with the Sussex County Arts Council.

Economics contest tests student skills

On Tuesday, June 2, students from across the state will be on campus to test their skills in the 12th annual Meaningful Economics Competition. Judging of the projects will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Purnell and MBNA America halls.

More than 300 children in grades 3-6 will be tested on their knowledge of the principals of economics and then asked to use that knowledge to produce a product.

In the problem-solving division, teams will be given an obsolete object that they have to transform into a marketable product. Once that is done, they must create an advertising campaign for the new product that they will demonstrate to competition judges. Past competition ad campaigns have included sketches, rap songs, special offers, sale prices and dramatic re-creations.

Winners will be selected from each grade level. The competition is sponsored by the College of Business and Economics Center for Economics Education and Entrepreneurship.
