Safety awards program spotlights initiatives

University units that are doing extraordinary things to increase the level of safety in the work environment are being recognized through a new monthly program established by the Department of Occupational Health and Safety.

According to Robin Elliott, occupational health and safety, the program will highlight, on a monthly basis, both individual and/or departmental contributions to safety.

The monthly award recipients are featured on the Department of Occupational Health and Safety web page at http://www.udel.edu /OHS/deptmonth.html

First recipients

In April, the Institute of Energy Conversion (IEC) was the first Department of the Month, and Wayne A. Buchanan the first employee recognized. The department was honored for its committment to safety, and Buchanan was recognized as the IEC chemical hygiene officer and safety committee chairperson. Recently, he presented a seminar on compressed gasses to campus employees.

Facilities Management-Operations and Maintenance Department is the current Department of the Month recipient, recognized for clean up of mechanical rooms around campus. Dave Millay, Facilities Management- Operations and Maintenance, initiated this major effort, which required substantial personnel and departmental resources. Of great importance was the proper disposition of chemicals and oil contaminated debris.

The following individuals also participated in the effort: John Bahr, Frank Bramante, Terry Forebush, Mike Friedly, Bob Garrison, Keith Hamm, Lee Hatley, Bill Hibble, Dave Murray, Wayne Norris Sr., Bill Pelletier, Russel Stewart, Joe Stracca and Steve Wescott.

To be recognized, recipients must introduce new or innovative safety process or procedures in the workplace; adopt significant cost saving techniques or make some other significant personal contributions that contributed directly to the departmental or University Safety Program.

The program is open to all UD permanent full-time and part-time staff and students. Nominees may be recommended by the individual, a peer, supervisor or member of the Department of Occupational Health and Safety. Nominations-in the form of an e-mail, memorandum or telephone message-must be submitted to occupational health and safety or an individual department's safety committee.

The information should include the name and title of the person or unit being nominated, and a brief description of the contribution to the safety program. The Department of Occupational Health and Safety staff will review nominations and decide upon the Department of the Month award recipients.

An acknowledgement letter will be issued by the director of occupational health and safety to recognize recipients, and a copy will be sent to the honoree's unit director and to the Office of the Executive Vice President.
