Football player Courtney Batts and lacrosse player Liza Shoemaker were named UD outstanding senior athletes for 1998.
A four-year starter at spread end, Betts, a physical education major from Philadelphia, established 10 school records in pass receptions in both a season and career, pass receiving yards in a career, career 100-yard receiving games, touchdown receptions in a game and career touchdown receptions.
A two-time, lacrosse All-American from Baltimore, Shoemaker was a four-year standout at UD. She became one of the most decorated players in UD's women's lacrosse history. A member of the U.S. National Lacrosse team, she received Brine/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Team third team All-American honors in both 1996 and 1997. A team co-captain, Shoemaker is an honor student with a major in international relations and a minor in religious studies.
