Learning an ancient art

Ana Lisa Hedstrom (second from left), a California fibers artist, demonstrates the ancient art of shibori arashi in a daylong workshop this semester on the campus.

In this process, fabric is bound and folded or pleated around a pole and then dyed in different colors. The resulting diagonal patterns are known for "resembling rainstorms," according to Japanese tradition. Hedstrom, well-known for her art-to-wear designs and an authority on shibori, has been invited to make presentations on the process in Japan, according to Vera Kaminski, art. Students and community artists attended the hands-on workshop, including (from left) Samantha Raider, Sara Dyson, Terry Foreman from the Newark Art House, Bill Donnelly and graduate student Kathi Davis.

The workshop was sponsored by Office of Women's Affairs and the Department of Art.
