Jeanne Benin, educational development, was named the University of Delaware Women's Club 1998 Woman of the Year at the organization's annual luncheon April 29 at the Blue and Gold Club.
The award honors a woman "of good character and reputation; a volunteer whose services have benefited the community and state; and someone who has gone well beyond what is expected in job/title/position."
Benin was cited for her service to Newark and the state of Delaware, her interest in issues that concern women and girls and her "combination of direct service and leadership."
She has served as state PTA president, regional coordinator of Nursing Mothers and state president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She was instrumental in AAUW's focus on the Initiative for Educational Equality and the resulting sponsorship of Sister-to-Sister, a teen girls' summit.
Benin, who lives in Corner Ketch with her husband, Josh, and two sons, also has been active in the Civic League of New Castle County, the Kirkwood Soccer Club and the Drummond Hill Swim Club.
The honor includes an award of a charitable donation of $125, and Benin selected the Women's Club's Women's Scholarship Fund as the recipient.
