Student receives Hoerl award

The Delaware Chapter of the American Statistical Association presented the 1998 Arthur E. Hoerl Meritorious Student Paper award to Kristen L. Mello, a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, at its luncheon April 24.

The competition is open to students in accredited graduate programs in all disciplines in the state of Delaware, and the winning paper is chosen to reflect the development and/or application of high quality statistical methods. The award, which consists of a certificate and $300, was given to Mello for her paper on the combining of existing classification techniques into a "new" competitive technique.

The award honors the late Arthur Hoerl, who in 1950 was the first statistician hired by the DuPont Co. He was professor of statistics at the University from 1967-1986 and developed a widely used statistical method, ridge regression, for which he was named a fellow of the American Statistical Association.

The chapter is creating a fund of $10,000 to ensure that the award continues. Contributions to help the chapter achieve its goal are appreciated. Checks, payable to the Delaware Chapter, ASA, Hoerl Award, may be sent to Jennifer Letsinger, Department of Mathematical Sciences.
