Pedal Pool on May 19

The University of Delaware will celebrate National Bicycle Month in May with an organized Pedal Pool, an invitation for employees to bike to work in small groups on Tuesday morning, May 19.

Participating employees will meet at various sites around Newark at approximately 7:15 a.m. and head to the Trabant University Center area, near Delaware and South College avenues.

This year's gathering points include

A volunteer is being sought for a departure from the Elkton Road area.

Arrival time at the Trabant University Center is estimated at approximately 7:45 a.m., when a group photograph will be taken. All bicyclists who participate will receive a Pedal Pool T-shirt, to be distributed at the meeting sites.

Interested individuals should contact Cindy Genau, Cooperative Extension, at 831-4973, for additional details about the Pedal Pool and for details on bicycle safety and regulations.

The focus of this year's month-long celebration is health and fitness benefits that can result from bicycling: reduction in serious illnesses, such as diabetes and heart-disease; less depression and anxiety caused by stress and an increased feeling of well-being.

Bicycling also can help relieve transportation congestion and is a great way to meet and visit with friends and neighbors. Bicyclists should always wear their helmets, ride with the traffic on the right side of the road and carry proper repair equipment, plenty of water and obey all highway bicycling laws.
