Garden party at Goodstay

A Spring Garden Party and art exhibition, sponsored by the Friends of Goodstay Gardens, will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, May 21, at the gardens on the Wilmington Campus, located at 2600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Tickets are $25 per person, and valet parking is available. Proceeds will be used to fund garden maintenance and the further rejuvenation of gardens on the Wilmington Campus.

The art exhibition will feature more than 40 original paintings by local artists that have been given to the University by Mrs. David Craven for the Goodstay Center.

After viewing the paintings on display, guests may visit the adjacent gardens. In case of rain, the party will be held indoors.

The Friends of Goodstay Gardens has elected the first officers of the organization, formed in 1993 with the goal of assisting the University rejuvenate and improve the gardens.

The officers are Helen Eliason, president, Sidney Craven, vice president; John M. Clayton Jr., secretary; and Edward K. Bispham III, treasurer.

Directors are Lydia R. Boyer, Thomas Buchter, Particia M. Bussard, David G. Butler, Nedinia S. du Pont, Nancy G. Frederick, John F. Horty, Richard W. Lighty, Diana J. Lopez, William M. W. Sharp, James E. Swasey and Michael J. Weaver. An additional director will be appointed by the council of the Academy of Lifelong Learning.

The advisory council includes Roxana C. Arsht, S. Samuel Arsht, Ellen F. Brothers, James S. Baker, Joseph G. DiPinto, Louise D. Roselle and Caroline H. Wellford.

The Goodstay House and the gardens, begun in the 18th century, became the property of Ellen du Pont Wheelwright in 1923. She and her landscape architect husband, Robert, expanded and enhanced the garden, and the property was bequeathed to the University in 1968.
