Alumnus honored with Medal of Distinction

Charles S. Joanedis, EG '50, received a Medal of Distinction from his alma mater May 8 during Honors Day ceremonies in the College of Engineering.

The Medal of Distinction is presented to recognize individuals who have made humanitarian, cultural, intellectual or scientific contributions to society, have achieved noteworthy success in their choosen professions or have given significant service to the community, state or region.

In presenting the award, University President David Roselle described Joanedis as an alumnus, mentor, businessman, benefactor and friend. "In your many capacities at the University of Delaware and in the state, you are admired and respected, and many have benefited from your service," Roselle said.

Joanedis received a bachelor of chemical engineering degree from UD in 1950. In 1984, he retired as vice president of product supply and distribution for Getty Refining & Marketing Company, headquartered in Tulsa, Okla. Since returning to Delaware in 1987, he has been active in University and community affairs.

In 1988, he established an endowed scholarship for undergraduate and graduate students in chemical engineering, and he was instrumental in establishing the Chemical Engineering Class of 1950 Scholarship Fund.

In addition to his activities at UD, Joanedis has served on the Board of Directors of Delaware Crime Stoppers, on the Customer Advisory Program of the Artesian Water Co., on the Allocations Committee of the United Way of Delaware and as president of the Southwood Civic Association.

At present, he is serving on the Salvation Army, Delaware Region Advisory Board, the Hockessin Post Office Customer Advisory Council and the Board of Directors of Seniors Against Federal Extravagance.

He is an elder at Limestone Presbyterian Church and is president-elect of the Rotary Club of Wilmington West. Last year, he received the 1997 Philanthropy Day Award from the Brandywine Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.

He and his wife, Sylvia, have a son, Charles E., who graduated from UD in 1973, and a daughter, Lynne Doyle, who attended UD and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University.
