Poet, novelist, English and Irish scholar Seamus Deane will visit the University on Thursday, Oct. 9, to read from his latest novel, Reading in the Dark. The free public reading is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. in Room 121 of Memorial Hall.
Deane's novel, which was nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize in England, is about a boy's childhood filled with fear and fantasy lived out in two dimensions. One is legendary, Grianan-the home of the warrior Fianna, the Field of the Disappeared and a house in Donegal where children are stolen away by demonic forces. The other is real, the city of Derry in the 1940s and '50s, immersed in political malevolence, family secrets and lethal intrigue.
Eddie, the narrator of the story, grows up within these two worlds sensing that they are connected until he learns the truth.
Deane, currently teaching at Notre Dame University, has published more than a dozen books, including Norton Anthology of Irish Literature, Selected Plays, Celtic Revivals and Selected Poems.
A reception will be held after the reading, sponsored by the Department of English. For more information, call 831-1974.
