An All-State football player from a small town, Katz went on to become the first man to earn a minor in women's studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. With this diverse background, he is able to bring a fresh perspective to issues that have traditionally been considered women's issues: rape, battering, pornography, sexism on MTV and the popularity of anti-feminist men, such as Andrew Dice Clay, Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh.
A popular and entertaining speaker, Katz routinely receives standing ovations from both men and women who hear him deliver a man's perspective into some of the most serious problems facing the college generation of the 1990s. His talk focuses on the lives and attitudes of men and boys.
Katz hold a master's degree from Harvard University, where his research concentration was the social construction of violent masculinity through sports and media. In addition to Real Men, he also is the founder and project coordinator of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) Project at Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society-the first large-scale attempt in the United States to enlist collegiate and professional athletes in the fight against rape and all forms of men's violence against women.
Katz' appearance is sponsored by the Trabant University Center, the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council. For more information, call 831-1296.
