Jerzy Nowinski, H. Fletcher Brown Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, received a medal of recognition in July from Marcin Swiecicki, mayor of the city of Warsaw, Poland.
Nowinski and his late wife, Maria Nowinska, who died earlier this year, were active patriots in the Polish Underground during World War II.
Nowinski was recognized for his contributions to Poland and Warsaw, where he was a former resident.
The medal was struck to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Warsaw's role as the capital of Poland.
In the letter, Swiecicki wrote: "Please accept our sincere thanks and words of praise for your great effort in the work of rebuilding Warsaw. Your work and dedication in the reconstruction of Warsaw guaranteed the generosity and respect of the citizens of our city.
"Also, I was pleased to learn of your great successes in your science in your new country.... Please accept [this medal] as an expression of gratitude."
The presentation of the medal and correspondence with the Polish government was carried out by Richard J. Libera, professor emeritus of mathematical sciences at UD and a close friend of the Nowinskis.
