Comedian Rudy Rush will host festival variety show

Comedian Rudy Rush, twice nominated by the Black Comedy Awards as New Comedian of the Year, will host the University of Delaware's annual Black Arts Festival Variety Show on Friday, May 1. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell Hall. Tickets are $4 at the door.

Rush, a Harlem-born artist, finished high school in Charleston, S.C., where his speed on the basketball court earned him the name, "Rudy Rush."

Using his blend of Northern and Southern expressions to his benefit, Rush is able to give his audiences a unique style of comedy.

His relaxed presentation blends intercity hip-hop with southern witticisms, breaking the stereotype of vulgarity that often accompanies today's comedians.

Rush has appeared on the Apollo Comedy Hour and the Def Comedy Jam's All Star Season. He has been featured on the Snap Album, a comedy album which has generated three books and will soon be made into a movie.

The variety show will encompass a range of student talent, including energetic dance, soulful singing, fashionable styles and original hip-hop renditions.
