Crew has been associated with the Smithsonian Institution since 1981. He has served in several roles, including historian, curator, acting director and, since 1994, director of the National Museum of American History. He has made numerous presentations throughout the country, many related to African-American history, families and the collection of African-American artifacts.
His articles and book reviews have appeared in The Black Collegian, New Jersey History, Smithsonian Institution Press, Monthly Labor Review, Business History Review and The Colonial Williamsburg Interpreter.
Crew has served as a board member of the American Association of Museums, Brown University, the National Council of History Education and National History Day. He is a member of the Maryland Commission for an African American Museum. He is an member of the African American Museums Association and Maryland Commission for an African-American Museum.
The event is cosponsored by the Department of History, the Black American Studies Program and the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture.
