will take the stage in Haydn's The Songstress.
The University of Delaware Opera Workshop will perform two operas,The Songstress (La Caterina) by Haydn and The Poor Sailor (Le pauvre matelot) by Milhaud, at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, April 24-25, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 26. All performances are in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. duPont Music Building. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students.
Directed by Patrick Evans and Marie Robinson, music, the double-cast operas feature students Catherine Short, Kirsten Hood, Andrew Meyer, Michael LaRoche, Brian Ezell, Jeff Chapman and Patrick Siler from New Castle County; Rachel Lavery, Windy Korell, Jaeho Choi and Christopher Berg from Seaford; and Rebecca DeVry from Kennett Square.
The Songstress is a humorous portrayal of the world of opera singers, focusing on the offstage intrigue among unscrupulous voice teachers, dramatic and manipulative divas, pushy stage mothers and innocent young suitors. In contrast, The Poor Sailor is a macabre, but true, surrealistic story, with libretto by Jean Cocteau, which explores the themes of passion, love and the extremes to which the human soul may be driven.
The opera workshop focuses on the art of solo vocal performance. Singers receive individual coaching in vocal and dramatic techniques and are challenged to create complete opera roles. The workshop produces operas for performance, on and off campus, in an environment that helps develop singers who aspire to performing careers.
