The Center for Teaching Effectiveness and Information Technologies/User Services are sponsoring a campus site for a live satellite program on "Copyright Issues on the Internet." The session will be held from 2:30-4 p.m., Thursday, April 2, in Room 125, MBNA America Hall.
The free program will provide information on how to make a reasonable, informed judgment about fair use online, without being an expert in copyright law.
Panelists will include Georgia Harper, and expert on copyright and manager of intellectual property in the University of Texas system; Steven McDonald, an associate counsel at Ohio State University; and Janis Bruwelheide, a national authority on intellectual property issues.
These specialists in copyright law will address common questions, including:

- How to tell whether material you download from the Internet is copyrighted,
- How to know if you may lawfully include certain materials in an online course,
- What guidelines exist for educational fair use of materials for online courses,
- What are the differences in fair use between traditional classrooms and distance education, and more.
TA Conference set Aug. 24-26
The Center for Teaching Effectiveness will hold its 1998 Teaching Assistants Conference from 8:30 a.m.-noon, Aug. 24-26, on the campus.The conference is designed to familiarize newly appointed TAs with their roles and responsibilities, with experienced TAs sharing information and their experiences.
Some of the 14 scheduled workshops include: "Leading Classroom Discussions," "Responding to Difficult Classroom Situations," "Teaching and Learning with Technology," "Working with Your Faculty Supervisor," "Problem-Solving Classes" and "Working with a Diverse Student Populations."
