Student honored for first-aid assistance

Ramon Giusti, a junior majoring in medical technology, recently received the Navy Achievement Medal, one of the highest awards given in peacetime.

A hospital corpsman second class in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Giusti was cited for the assistance he provided in an automobile accident near the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center on the Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington.

Giusti, who is originally from Puerto Rico, has been in the Naval Reserve for 13 years and attended field medical service school, learning first aid in a combat environment.

He put his knowledge into practice when a two-car accident occurred. One car contained a couple from Mexico, who were trapped inside. Giusti spoke to them in Spanish, took their pulses and checked other signs, told them not to move because of possible injuries and was on hand when the emergency medical technicians arrived. He stayed on the scene to translate for the team and the couple, who were then transported to Christiana Medical Center.

Giusti was cited for "superior performance of his duties....providing preliminary medical assessment, first responder care and acting as Spanish interpreter for arriving EMT personnel."

The citation continued, "Petty Officer Giusti's initiative and proactive involvement were invaluable in reducing trauma to the accident victims and played a key role in the subsequent successful treatment....[his] actions reflected credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
