Search reopened for arts and science dean

Provost Mel Schiavelli announced today he has reconstituted the search committee to find a new dean for the College of Arts and Science.

Dean Stuart Cooper of the College of Engineering will chair the committee.

The initial search for a replacement for Mary Richards, English, did not yield a successful candidate, Schiavelli said.

Margaret Andersen, sociology, who has served as interim dean of the college since July 1997, has agreed to continue serving as interim dean for the 1998-99 academic year, he said.

"This committee will begin its work later this spring, and I expect that candidates will visit the campus before the end of the fall 1998 semester," Cooper said. "I encourage members of the faculty to nominate qualified internal and external candidates for this important position."

Other members of the reconstituted search committee are Steven Brown, chemistry and biochemistry; Martha Carothers, art; Maxine Colm, administration; Barbara Gates, Alumni Distinguished Professor of English; Errol Lloyd, computer and information sciences; Robin Morgan, animal and food science; Carlos Plata-Salaman, biological sciences; David Pong, history; Daniel Rich, human resources, education and public policy; Marie Robinson, music; Evelyn Satinoff, psychology; Frank R. Scarpitti, sociology; and Juan Villamarin, anthropology.
