FSAP services cover topics from vacations to grief

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) offers a variety of services throughout the year for faculty and staff.

Lunch and learn

Lunch and Learn programs are designed to help individuals maintain a healthy, holistic lifestyle-mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. A minimum enrollment is required for each program.

To register, call 831-2414 or send e-mail to Darlene.Sharp@ mvs.udel.edu

Vacation planning

The inability to sleep, winter blues, constant fatigue, poor concentration, feeling keyed up and other symptoms might be a warning signs that you need a vacation.

Taking a planned vacation is a sensible answer to stress. A representative of University Travel Services will provide information on how to get the best values and how to avoid bargain pitfalls. A special door prize will be awarded.

Stress management

Activity at work can sometimes resemble the ups and downs of a roller coaster ride. Some stressors in our lives come from external sources-like work and family responsibilities. Others, like insecurity and negative feelings and attitudes, come from within.

Regardless of the source, each individual must find solutions that work.

Increase your understanding of the ways unmanaged stress can affect health, productivity and personal lives. Discover the tools that can help you control your stress level. Cecily Sawyer Harmon, Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, will lead this session.

Preventing job burnout

If having a bad day at work has become the standard rather than the exception, then it is likely that you are a victim of job burnout. Work does not have to be a chore. There are specific actions you can take to beat job burnout and transform work pressures into productivity. Introducing you to these techniques and showing you how to use them is the purpose of this session.

Techniques of meditation

Meditation is an ancient practice of calming the mind. Having a calm and centered spirit is just as valuable today as it ever was, maybe more so, considering the pace of life, the rate of change and the sensory overload in society. We are constantly thinking, doing, working and accomplishing.

Meditation allows us to concentrate on our own inward activity, spending time in contemplation and reflection. In meditation practice, participants are trained to focus attention on the present, not to dwell on things that have happened in the past or that may occur in the future.

Parenting techniques

Raising children is one of life's most wonderful experiences, but it can be both challenging and frustrating. We must employ sensitivity and a sensible approach to responsibly raise self-assured and happy children.

This three-part series will explore techniques for communicating with children, focus on discipline vs. punishment and discuss how to set goals for children and the family.

Discussion groups

The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) can help organize professionally-led or participant-led discussion groups on various topics. All discussion groups meet monthly. Decisions regarding speakers and other activities are made by the group. Staff support will be provided by the FSAP.

A minimum of 10 persons must be preregistered to start a group. The dates and time of group meetings will accommodate the schedules and needs of the group members as much as possible.

The purpose of the group is to provide information and support to those sharing mutual interests. Register by calling 831-2414.

Grief/Loss Support Group

For persons who have experienced the loss of a loved one, this group offers information about the grieving process, as well as an opportunity to share and receive support from others who have had similar experiences.

These confidential, group-directed sessions will strive to help individuals advance toward personal healing after a close, personal loss. This group will meet for six weeks and the facilitator is Cecily Sawyer Harmon, Faculty and Staff Assistance Program.

Workshops on request

Session leaders are available to lead groups and present workshops on a variety of work, family and personal issues to departments and groups upon request. For further information, call 831-2414.

Lending library

Books, pamphlets and videos may be borrowed from the FSAP resource library. Call 831-2414 to speak with a staff member or to use any of the these resources. The library is open daily from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Resources are available in a number of areas, including anger control, eating disorders, eldercare, gay and lesbian issues, grief, bereavement, losses, parenting, substance abuse and self-esteem.
