The Engineering of cosmetics

Keynote speaker Clara Mercado, manager of Avon Products, led a hands-on demonstration of how engineering affects her daily activities at a lunch program for women high school students held last month at the University. Focusing on engineering in the cosmetics industry, the day-long orientation explored the challenges of a major in engineering.

Michael Vaughan, engineering, gave a general introduction to the field of engineering. He was followed by Paul Imhoff, civil and environmental engineering; Maureen Foley, a graduate student in mechanical/materials engineering; Michael Piovoso, an electrical engineer from the DuPont Co.; and Nily Dan, chemical engineering, who discussed how the different disciplines of engineering play a role in the cosmetics industry.

The event was sponsored by the College of Engineering, the UD Society of Women Engineers, the Business and Industry Alliance in Education and Avon Products, as part of National Engineering Week activities.
